DEAR DIGITAL | The real world is in yours hands

A long time since I wrote, the summer came and went so did the christmas and I wanted to wait for the new year to kick off my mobile debates. Remember that hilarious video I forgot my phone?

Question 1 - Ask yourself when was the last time you picked a pen? {for me it was to write a rough of this post hence why my spelling and grammar is better than previous posts.}

When I moved to Berlin {way back when} for my placement year in 2006 I remember without any reason deciding to document my experiences on an online blog {only god know what was the hot blog platform then!}. Like I said I did not even think why but I think it perhaps it had something to do with letting friends and family know I was ok and that they was not to come visit me, as I feared I would suffer too much homesickness.

Today as I still try to get by with my Nokia C2, {yes a dummy phone with no internet, but it has a cute 3.2 mega pixel camera} I watch and observe everyone and their lack of physical contact, it seems that everyone has become best friends with some sort of mobile device {aka the green or red fruit phone}. Really honestly nobody looks at each other anymore, why don’t you try it while your eating your apple and tapping your friend? {sounds odd I know but I know you get my drift!} Look at the person to your left or right, it ok they will NOT notice because they too a messing with something that looks like your apple.

Ask yourself some questions about them what colour hair do they really have? Is that really a designer accessory? Are they really doing something important of just scrolling through their contact, pictures or even better the system settings? Most importantly will they miss their stop?

It is in my DNA to people watch if I could be paid to do it I would have found my dream J-O-B and because of this I am so afraid that if I go back to smart I will not be able to fulfill this wonderful pastime of mine. Well that is unless I just grab a smartphone and scroll through Facebook and twitter, but I the pictures just are not the same as looking some one real, it is difficult to explain because facebook and twitter have become the real world too! But perhaps I have it an idea. When I go back to smart in collaboration with google I will just search commuter people tap {not click or push} youtube and I will still be able to people watch, So my digital commands forget the Instagram selfies 2014 is all about selfie videos I better get the hang of Vine really soon as least for myself.

DEAR DIGITAL | the smartphone vs. the dummy phone

My 1st letter to digital is dedicated to the dummy phone. “What this all about you say? I always thought a dummy phone was one of those phones that phone stores used to keep as display objects way back in the day.”

What is the difference? A smartphone is a simply a mobile phone that incorporates a personal digital assistant. In short it is a palmtop computer that you can do just about anything with except stop your baby from waking up and going to sleep when they want. So you’re talking about the iPhone and the other iPhone and the new iPhone.

A dummy phone allows you to make calls, receive calls sometimes take low res pictures and if your really lucky allow you to view Facebook In only blue, black and white, kind of like the new mobile teletext. Honestly when I think dummy phone I think Nokia, with the old school ditd ditd, ditd ditd messenger tone.

Know you know all that I should begin confessing in this short write, I enjoy designing for dummy phones, there! I said it! There something about the restrictions that challenge my thinking. I am forced (a good force) to sit there and explore basic textures, colours and look and feels, in a very restricted space. Which is a lot more challenging that if you’re given an endless palette.

Shockingly I would like to admit even though I specialise in design for mobile devices. I still carry a dummy phone and use it with pride. Quite frankly I am at simply at that “almost 30 moment” in my life where anything that can make my life easier makes me happy. I am sure I will grow out as soon Apple or someone else {whoas} me with something that takes technology to another level, I don’t think this has happened since the iPad came into our hearts. So product designers, creative technologists I am waiting patiently.
